Music at the Court of the King of Castile. When Tariq and his arabic and berberian horsemen set foot on the Iberian Peninsula, no one could have guessed that a new kingdom was born that was to enlighten the Western Mediaeval world for five centuries.
A new culture took shape,
enriched by the convergence of three traditions, the Muslim, the Jewish
and the Christian. Just like architecture music was influenced as far
as its form and the musical instruments used were concerned. Thus the
"oud" was to become the lute, the "rebab" was to become the rebec, the
"gaïta" the pipe and subsequently the bagpipe, the "tar" the
tambour de basque, the "santour" the cymbalom and the qanoun the
psaltery...
